Dad, how do I?

Hey kids, it’s Tool Tuesday, and today I’m going to talk to you about hex wrenches, also known as Allen wrenches. They’re called Allen wrenches because there was a company called Allen Manufacturing that used to create and manufacture them. But they’re really hex wrenches because they have six sides, so the generic term is hex wrench. It’s kind of like Kleenex, where Kleenex has become known as tissue – just another name for tissue. Similarly, Allen wrench is the same as a hex wrench.

But before we get started, I do have a dad joke for you, and this one is original. Did you hear about the stomach surgeon who exchanged his tools for an Allen wrench? It was gut-wrenching. Anyway, let’s get started.

So that’s what an Allen wrench or a hex wrench looks like up close. It has the same six sides on both ends, so you can turn it this way or that way. They come with different holders, so you can keep them organized. I didn’t bring my original pack here, which had loose Allen wrenches inside, but now I have this holder. However, as you can see, some are missing, so they can get lost. These holders are handy because they provide more leverage compared to just using the wrench by itself.

If you’re tightening something tough, turning it this way gives you more leverage, similar to what I showed in the crowbar video. Yet, they can get lost if you don’t put them back properly. This one came with a handle, which works well and prevents loss, but it might not be suitable for tight spaces.

Personally, I prefer using a drill. This kit costs between $10 to $20 and comes with various tips. With an extension, you can insert the tip and use the drill. Adjust the collar to avoid over-tightening. Now, let’s move on to an interesting story about a store where I bought some furniture.

I went to a store known for its inexpensive products, and while I did get something affordable, I paid for it with my time trying to navigate through the complex layout. It felt like a maze as I weaved through various departments. Now, about the tip of a tape measure wiggling – let’s discuss how to use the drill properly.

Remember to adjust the collar on the drill to control torque. You want it to ratchet out early, so you don’t over-tighten. I demonstrate how over-tightening can damage wood, and I emphasize the importance of being cautious with the drill setting. Using a drill can save you time and effort, especially when assembling furniture with many hex wrench screws.

I hope this was helpful. Thanks for watching, and God bless you.
