One of Twitter's most popular comedy accounts said that Elon Musk is going to make Twitter "a beautiful thing," in an interview with the Washington Post.
The user, who uses the handle @dril and the pseudonym Wint, has 1.7 million followers, and is known for his absurdist comedy style. Speaking to the Washington Post in a phone interview, Dril compared Twitter to Musk's invention of the Hyperloop.
"Elon, he invented the Hyperloop," Dril said referring to the high-speed transportation network Musk conceptualized in 2013. Hyperloop has been tested but not yet put into commercial use.
"I think Twitter will be just like that. It's a work in progress, he's building it from the ground up. He's gonna make it nicer, and they're going to use freedom of speech to cut down on bullshit in daily life. I think it's gonna be a beautiful thing at the end of the day."
Dril said Musk's Twitter takeover has been entertaining calling him a "classic comedic showman," to the Post.
"Everything he does is a comedic bit. He's always trying to get a laugh, that's why he makes all his cars suicidal. Just watching everything burn, it's entertaining, that's for sure."
Dril started his Twitter account in 2008 and has grown to be one of the most notable users associated with the "Weird Twitter" subculture, a group of users who create ironic or bizarre posts for humorous effect. Users have said that a number of his old tweets predicted Musk's 2022 takeover.
Dril Tweeted in 2014: "i will annihilate all spoofs of me . i will take anyone who does spoofs of me or my beloved content to the court of criminal law."
Users said this post was similar to Musk's post about parody accounts in 2022: "Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying 'parody' will be permanently suspended"
In another tweet from 2017, Dril predicted the end of Twitter in 2022: "i truly believe that i will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity when i get every single post on this fucking website deleted by 2022."
When asked whether he'd make the switch from Twitter to other platforms like Mastodon, TikTok or Substack, Dril told the Post that he isn't keen.
"I'd like to know what these apps are, because none of the apps I've used are good," he said. "They ask you for pictures of your son, your father. They're unusable basically. They have Russian pop-up ads and malware. I'm not planning on leaving Twitter anytime soon."
But Dril said he would never pay $8 for a Twitter checkmark and if the platform dies he's okay with it because "it'll be like a cleansing fire."
"It'll burn down the house that I grew up in, and, with it, all the memories will be gone. I can start from a clean slate, tabula rasa. From there, I can try again and hopefully make an account that's actually good."
