There are many ordinary, boring objects you can find abandoned in Baldur's Gate 3's villages such as spoons, plates, and a wrench. A shovel is among one of these ordinary objects, but one of the most important ones to find.

Though your journey is perilous and not for the weak, a shovel will be very crucial before you even realize it. There are some things in the game that cannot be completed without one. Shovels are not necessary for adventure, but you will find out why they are so useful.

If you are looking for a shovel, chances are you have found a strange pile of dirt that needs digging.

Mostly, you cannot find a shovel in a specific, singular place. The location of such ordinary objects is always randomized each playthrough if they are meant to be inside containers.

However, In Act 1, there is one sure location where you will always find a shovel.

In the Blighted Village, there is a sleeping Bugbear behind one of the dilapidated houses, to the North. There is a hole in the ground near him, where two shovels will lie, like in the photo above. This location will always remain the same for each playthrough.

Aside from that location, you will be able to eventually find a shovel by checking regular containers. For instance, the Blighted Village is full of crates and containers. Most of it is junk, but that is good because you may chance upon a shovel.

You will have more luck finding a shovel in an abandoned, once-lived in area.

There are hidden chests all throughout Baldur's Gate 3. You only find out about them if you walk near a randomized area and pass a Perception check.

These hidden chests can be just about anywhere, so if the specific area looks like space for a dirt mound, you should at least walk by it and see if you get a Perception check.

By passing a Perception check, a dirt mound will show, like in the photo above. If you have a shovel equipped, all you have to do is interact with the dirt mound and your character will dig up a chest.

These chests can contain just about anything from Gold, rare special boots or gloves, and something of high value for selling purposes.

You do not need one shovel per character.

If a shovel is in your custom characters inventory, but you make Astarion dig, he will automatically take the shovel.
