A Massena man was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after police said he hit and killed several cats with a hammer.

New York State Police arrested 28-year-old Edward Briel on Monday in Louisville.

The victim told police that Briel had taken their three cats and struck them with a hammer.

Two of the cats were dead when police arrived on scene. The third was transported to Java Veterinarian Clinic, but had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries, according to officials.

Briel was arraigned in the town of Norfolk Court and then released.
